Simon Penn winner of Research Excellence Award

Dr. Simon Penn has been nominated as the winner of the Open University Research Excellence Awards in the category of Outstanding Postgraduate Research Students. This is a huge success, and we as his supervisors congratulate Simon for being recognised by the Open University for his outstanding work.

Kevin Shakesheff, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation, shared his congratulations:
“This year saw an extremely high calibre of submissions to the Research Excellence Awards, and I would like to thank all of those who spent time completing a submission and nominated themselves or colleagues. These awards not only highlight the brilliant research going on around the OU, but also how we collaborate and support each other to deliver this research and create real-world impact. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to those who won awards and to those who were shortlisted for each category – well done!”

Simon was the first postgraduate student to achieve the new PGR qualification, and he has produced exceptional research directly aligned with the core mission of the Open University: to provide high-quality university education. His research addresses a significant challenge in assignment feedback.

Maria Fernandez-Toro and myself supervised Simon. His thesis about ‘Comparative Analysis of the Comprehension of Text and Screencast Feedback by Distance Learning Students’ is freely available on ORO: https://oro.open.ac.uk/95644/

Trophies will be awarded at the Autumn Research event, which will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Unity Place in Milton Keynes.
